LAKE FOREST, Ill. – No conclusions can be drawn from one practice. But the assertion that tight ends aren’t involved in the passing game in Mike Martz’s offense was a fallacy at least Friday morning.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – No conclusions can be drawn from one practice. But the assertion that tight ends aren’t involved in the passing game in Mike Martz’s offense was a fallacy at least Friday morning.

Greg Olsen<!--–> and Desmond Clark<!--–> combined for a handful of receptions from quarterbacks Jay Cutler<!--–> and Caleb Hanie<!--–> in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills during the Bears’ first minicamp workout at Halas Hall.

After Cutler overthrew Olsen on the first play, the two connected over the middle twice and down the seam once. Clark made two nice catches over the middle, once reaching high to pull down a pass.

“They caught a lot of balls out there today,” Cutler said. “That’s just all speculation. No one really knows what we’re going to do offensively. We’re still kind of molding that to the guys we have and seeing who can pick it up and who can’t and who fits the system.

“Right now, all the guys are doing great. Tight ends caught quite a few balls today as did the receivers. We’re going to spread it around and get everyone touches.”

Brian’s back: Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher<!--–>, who sustained a season-ending wrist injury in last year’s opener in Green Bay, celebrated his return to action with a leaping interception in 7-on-7 drills.

“It’s been a long time,” said coach Lovie Smith. “Brian missed most of last year, but he’s been here every day in the offseason. He’s a good football player. We’re expecting great things from him. It seemed like old times out there today with him.”

End game: Marquee free-agent acquisition Julius Peppers<!--–> also made his presence known, twice bolting into the backfield from the right defensive end position for what would have been blindside sacks.

“We’ve seen a lot of good things from him,” Smith said. “He’s a special athlete. He’ll make a lot of plays for us. It just seems like the entire group looks a little bit better with him in it.”

On the ball: Cornerback Charles Tillman<!--–> put his ball-stripping skills on display again Friday, causing running back Chester Taylor<!--–> to fumble after a short completion. Since the Bears selected Tillman in the second round of the 2003 draft, he leads all NFL defensive backs with 21 forced fumbles.

Tillman worked with the second team in 7-on-7 drills before rejoining the starting unit in place of Tim Jennings<!--–> for 11-on-11 plays. Tillman had missed all but one week of the offseason program before returning Monday.

“There’s no second or first team right now,” Smith said. “There’s a starting rotation that you have. It’s kind of based on who’s been here the most right now.

“When some of the players haven’t been here the entire time, you don’t know exactly what type of condition they’re in and you have to get them out here and see. Charles Tillman is one of our guys. Every day that I’ve been here that’s been the case and that won’t change.”

Sights seen: Cornerback Corey Graham<!--–> intercepted a deflected Hanie pass in the morning practice. … Hanie excelled in the afternoon session, zipping a laser to Rashied Davis<!--–> between three defenders and hitting Juaquin Iglesias<!--–> on a comeback route after rolling to the right. … Although he likely would have been sacked on the play, Cutler floated a deep pass to Hester just over safety Danieal Manning<!--–>.

Health update: Center Olin Kreutz<!--–>, tight end Brandon Manumaleuna<!--–> and punter Brad Maynard<!--–> are sitting out the three-day minicamp while recovering from injuries. Receiver Earl Bennett<!--–> and linebacker Nick Roach<!--–> were limited Friday. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris<!--–> and linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa<!--–> both participated in one of the two practices. Defensive tackle Marcus Harrison<!--–> sat out because he was ill.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Jay Cutler<!--–> knows that baby steps must be taken in learning first-year coordinator Mike Martz’s offense. But the quarterback was pleased with how the unit performed in its debut.

“There were a few glitches out there, but for the first day I thought it was a little bit cleaner than what we expected,” Cutler said after the Bears kicked off their weekend minicamp with a two-hour practice Friday morning. ”We’ve got a long way to go, though, but I thought it was a good first day.”

On the first play of 7-on-7 drills, Cutler’s overthrown pass intended for tight end Greg Olsen<!--–> was nearly intercepted by safety Chris Harris<!--–>. The quarterback rebounded with completions to running back Matt Forte<!--–> and wide receiver Devin Hester<!--–> on back-to-back plays.

Cutler later connected twice each with Olsen and fellow tight end Desmond Clark<!--–>, hit Hester and receiver Johnny Knox<!--–> across the middle and completed a screen pass to Forte. Cutler was intercepted twice in the practice, first by leaping middle linebacker Brian Urlacher<!--–> over the middle and later by cornerback Zackary Bowman<!--–> deep down the right sideline.

While the learning process will continue throughout the spring and summer, Cutler has operated Martz’s offense since the offseason program began March 29, and the fifth-year pro likes the system.

“Mike does a great job of mixing things up and keeping the defense off balance, putting guys in match-ups where they can win,” Cutler said. “It’s exciting. It’s changing. It’s always different.”

Martz’s scheme is a descendant of the potent “Air Coryell” offenses employed by coach Don Coryell and Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts with the San Diego Chargers in the 1970s and ‘80s.

“It is a little bit different,” Cutler said. “It’s a high-paced, high-octane offense. Guys are flying around. Quarterbacks have to make quick, precise decisions and you have to be really accurate with the ball.

“It puts a lot on the quarterback, puts a lot on the receivers. But it’s going well. The guys are picking it up and they’re really receptive to it.”

Cutler has also enjoyed being coached by Martz.

“It’s been a real joy working with Mike,” Cutler said. “He’s like a lot of the other great coaches I’ve had; he’s very, very smart. He knows how to interact with players, especially quarterbacks. He does a great job of giving you a lot of information, but not overloading you at the same point. It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve been meeting pretty much every day just one-on-one just talking through plays, talking through football.”

Cutler understands why Martz was considered a “quarterback-friendly” coordinator during his time working with Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger with the St. Louis Rams.

“Everything he does is to put a quarterback in a good position to be successful,” Cutler said. “He’s not going to call plays, he’s not going to install stuff [that doesn’t benefit the quarterback]. Everything we have done he makes sure I am comfortable with. If not, we adjust it or find some medium ground to make it work.”

Coach Lovie Smith never doubted that Cutler and Martz would mesh.

“What I hope to see is exactly how it’s been from Day 1,” Smith said. “They have mutual respect for each other. Of course being in the middle, I knew both of the guys, knew that it would be a good fit.

“All players are looking for someone that can help their game. Mike can help Jay’s game. He can help our offense. Guys see that. Jay has taken over the offense and is learning each day with it and growing each day with it.”

With four more minicamp practices this weekend and 14 OTA workouts in June, that growth will continue. Cutler said he expects that players won’t be entirely comfortable with the system until some time during training camp.

“That’s the game plan,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of time. But we’ve got to keep putting a lot of pressure on myself and the rest of the guys to learn as much as possible as quickly as possibly, but be able to retain all the information throughout the year. That’s going to be the hard part.”

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – NFL.com fantasy football columnist Michael Fabiano has selected Bears wide receiver Devin Aromashodu<!--–> as one of 10 fantasy football sleepers for the 2010 season.

“During the final four weeks of last season, only Andre Johnson and DeSean Jackson scored more fantasy points among wide receivers than Aromashodu,” Fabiano writes. “The veteran became a popular target for Jay Cutler<!--–>, averaging close to 10 targets per game in that time.

“With Mike Martz now calling the offensive plays, Aromashodu should be in for the best season of his NFL career. He’s certainly a player to target in drafts.”

Aromashodu developed into a go-to receiver for the Bears late last season. He caught 22 passes for 282 yards and 4 TDs in the final four games after compiling nine receptions for 112 yards and no TDs in 12 career contests prior to Week 14.

Aromashodu’s four TD catches over the final four weeks tied for the second most in the NFL during that span behind Colts tight end Dallas Clark, who had five scores. In the last two games, Aromashodu caught a 39-yard TD pass from Cutler to beat the Vikings in overtime before hauling in two scoring grabs in the season finale in Detroit.

Aromashodu’s 150 yards versus Minnesota were the most by a Bears player since Marty Booker had 157 yards Oct. 24, 2002 in an overtime victory over the Lions.

History lesson: Bears owner Virginia McCaskey spoke to the team’s rookies for about 40 minutes Thursday. The daughter of legendary Hall of Famer George Halas discussed the franchise’s storied history, which began in 1920 when her father founded the Decatur Staleys.

“It was great,” said third-round draft pick Major Wright, a safety from Florida. “She’s a cool lady. We learned a lot from her. Her being around football as long as she has been is very special.”

Mrs. McCaskey talked about the Bears playing in Wrigley Field, the memorable 73-0 victory over the Washington Redskins in the 1940 NFL title game and even how the franchise got its name. (If baseball players were Cubs, Halas reasoned that football players were bigger and therefore should be Bears.)

“It was awesome,” said fourth-round pick Corey Wootton, a defensive end from Northwestern. “She’s been around the game of football for so long. Some of her stories were pretty amazing.”

Roster move: The Bears on Thursday signed undrafted rookie free agent Vince Vance, a guard from Georgia who participated in the team’s rookie minicamp April 30-May 2 on a tryout basis.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears aren’t allowed to hit until the pads come on in training camp, but that doesn’t mean that this weekend’s non-contact minicamp practices won’t be intense.

For the first time since the offseason program began March 29, the Bears offense and defense will square off in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills during two practices Friday and Saturday and one Sunday.

“We know we’ve made a lot of improvement, but you want to see it in a competitive environment,” said coach Lovie Smith. “It’s the first time [the offense will face the defense] and guys are excited.

“I know we’re going to be a good football team. But to see it all come together is exciting.”

After finishing 7-9 and missing the playoffs for the third straight year in 2009, the Bears made several key changes. They revamped their offensive coaching staff by hiring coordinator Mike Martz and three new position coaches, and bolstered their defense by signing marquee free-agent end Julius Peppers and reacquiring safety Chris Harris in a trade with the Carolina Panthers.

The Bears addressed other needs in free agency by signing running back Chester Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna and in the draft by selecting Florida safety Major Wright and Northwestern defensive end Corey Wootton with their first two picks.

The Bears will conduct two-a-day minicamp practices for the first time since Smith’s first two years as coach in 2004 and 2005. New offenses were also being installed those two seasons as well, but the Bears coach insisted that that’s only part of the reason for having five minicamp practices instead of three.

“We just feel like we want to take advantage of the opportunities, and getting two more practices in is big,” Smith said. “Also, we’ve gone three years without making the playoffs, so you want to shake things up a little bit. Every day we’ve been out on the football field we’ve gotten better. So we have a couple more opportunities to get better.”

Most eyes at minicamp will be focused directly on Martz, quarterback Jay Cutler and a Bears offense that looks to rebound after ranking 23rd in the NFL and struggling with interceptions last season.

So far, Smith has liked what he’s seen from the team’s offensive players during the offseason program.

“They’ve taken to it fully,” Smith said. “They’re excited about it. Any offensive player should be excited about our brand of football that we’re going to play, especially the skill guys. Jay is excited. So are the receivers.

“All of our skill guys will have opportunities to make plays. I’ve seen the excitement out here just running plays on air. I know they’re excited to see exactly how they match up against a good defense.”

On the mend: Manumaleuna, center Olin Kreutz and punter Brad Maynard will not participate in the minicamp practices while they recover from injuries. Linebacker Nick Roach and wide receiver Earl Bennett will be limited. Manumaleuna and Bennett both underwent minor knee surgery.

Defensive tackle Tommie Harris and linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will practice once a day.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Lance Briggs will return to the Pro Bowl, Julius Peppers will reach double digits in sacks and the Bears defense will rank near the top of the NFL.

At least those were the opinions expressed by voters in recent polls on ChicagoBears.com.

Asked which Bears player was most likely to make a return trip to the Pro Bowl, Briggs garnered 37.9 percent of the 29,466 votes that were cast. Peppers finished second (22.4 percent), followed by Brian Urlacher (22.0), Jay Cutler (14.1) and Tommie Harris (3.5).

Briggs has been voted to five straight Pro Bowls, joining Hall of Famers Bill George, Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary as the only Bears linebackers to accomplish that feat.

On Thursday, Briggs was named second-team All-Pro when a re-vote was conducted after Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing was suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL’s policy on steroids and related substances.

Asked how many sacks Peppers would register in his first season with the Bears, 44.4 percent of the voters chose 10-12, followed by 13 or more (25.2 percent), 7-9 (25.0) and less than 7 (5.3).

The marquee free-agent acquisition has recorded 25 sacks the past two years and has compiled at least seven sacks in seven of his eight NFL seasons with 12, 7, 11, 10½, 13, 2½, 14½ and 10½.

Asked where the Bears defense will rank in total yards this season, 48.6 of the voters selected between 1 and 8, followed by 9-16 (41.2 percent), 17-24 (7.5) and 25-32 (2.7). In Lovie Smith’s six seasons as coach, the Bears defense has finished 21st, 2nd, 5th, 28th, 21st and 17th last year.

In other polls, the majority of fans voted that Urlacher would lead the Bears in tackles this season, Dick Butkus is the greatest middle linebacker in franchise history and safety Major Wright will have the best NFL career among the Bears’ first four draft picks.

A total of 51.0 percent of the voters felt that Urlacher would lead the Bears in tackles. Briggs garnered 41.1 percent, while 7.9 percent thought that another unnamed player would top the team.

Asked to identify the top Bears middle linebacker of all time, 58.3 percent of the voters selected Butkus, followed by Singletary (31.7), Urlacher (9.3) and George (0.7).

In predicting which rookie would have the best career, Wright drew 69.8 percent of the vote, followed by Corey Wootton (16.9), Tim LeFevour (9.1) and Joshua Moore (4.2).

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears rookies returned to Halas Hall Monday for the first time since their minicamp two weeks ago, mixing with their veteran teammates for the first time.

“It’s different than rookie camp, that’s for sure,” said quarterback Dan LeFevour, a sixth-round draft pick from Central Michigan. “You have different faces and people that have been around here a while.
“You just try to follow the example of the older guys, do the best you can and learn as much as you can at this point because it’s all brand new for all the rookies.”

Bears players lifted weights, attended position meetings and practiced Monday morning with the offense working on one field and the defense on another.

“It’s been good,” said defensive end Corey Wootton, a fourth-round pick from Northwestern. “I’m just trying to watch [the veterans] and get every piece of knowledge and advice from them that I can. I see why they’re veterans. They’re really skilled in what they do.”

Being an NFL player became a lot more real for Wootton Monday when he attended meetings alongside veteran Pro Bowlers he’s watched on television the last several years.

“It’s definitely sunk in,” Wootton said. “It’s been a dream of mine. It’s crazy playing with guys like Tommie Harris and Julius Peppers. They’re tremendous players and it’s an honor playing with them.”

Bears rookies were relieved that the veterans treated them well. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they won’t spend the summer carrying their teammates’ equipment and singing their college fight song.

“You hear all kinds of different stories, so you really don’t know what to expect,” said linebacker Matt Mayberry, an undrafted rookie free agent from Indiana. “But everyone in the linebacker room was real nice and helping me out.”

“At first it was kind of quiet,” said offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb, a seventh-round pick from West Texas A&M. “I didn’t want to say anything. I was just going to keep my eyes forward and do what I was told. But after a while, we got things going and got a little conversation going.”

LeFevour was more worried about executing during practice than being hazed by veterans.

“I had more anxiety about on-the-field stuff,” he said. “There’s nothing you can do about what happens off the field. It’s definitely something that’s brand new to you. You’re used to being in college for five years and being in similar surroundings and now it’s all brand new, so there’s a little anxiety.”
Minicamp approaching: The Bears will conduct their mandatory full-squad minicamp this weekend at Halas Hall, practicing twice Friday and Saturday (8:30-10:30 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m.) and once Sunday (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.).

It’s the first time since Lovie Smith’s second season as Bears coach in 2005 that two-a-day sessions will be held during minicamp. The practices are open to the media but not the public.

The Bears players will sign autographs and provide instruction to boys and girls ages 7-18. The camp costs $60 for Rockford residents and $65 for non-residents.

“I love giving back,” said Bennett, an Alabama native. “Growing up, we never really had anybody [from the NFL] come through the city of Birmingham. I think having an NFL player help out kids with fundamentals and techniques will give them a slight advantage.

“It’ll be a lot of fun. I love doing things like this. Any time I can help out with camps and things like that, I’m more than delighted to do it.”

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Despite the great success the Bears have enjoyed on special teams, Dave Toub swears that he doesn’t own an assembly line that churns out players who excel in that phase of the game.

Asked if special teams standouts are made or born, the Bears coordinator said: “They have to have innate ability with toughness, instincts and speed. So I think you’re born with most of the traits to be a good special teams player.”

That perspective makes Toub more of a gardener than a mad scientist in terms of weeding out the players who don’t have the ability to contribute on special teams and honing the skills of those who do.

Many players entering the NFL only participated on special teams early in their college careers before cementing starting positions on offense or defense.

“When we’re evaluating players we have to go back to their freshman and sophomore tape or just try to project a guy by looking at his senior tape on offense or defense to see what kind of traits he has,” Toub said.

“You look for someone who’s not afraid to stick their head in there; people who are tenacious when they block and finish their blocks. You’re looking for someone who plays hard every down. They have to jump off the tape.”

The toughest challenge Toub faces with novices is teaching an offensive player how to tackle.

“It’s something that they’re not used to,” he said. “You have to revert back all the way to when they were in fifth or sixth grade. The hardest part is being able to break down and wrap up and tackle in space.”

One of the Bears’ greatest success stories is Garrett Wolfe. A record-breaking running back at Northern Illinois, the diminutive 5-7, 186-pounder has developed into a special teams standout in the NFL after never having played that phase of the game in college.

A 2007 third-round draft pick, Wolfe initially balked at playing special teams.

“It’s one of those things that you’ve got to want to do,” said Wolfe, who became the 12th player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for over 5,000 yards. “Having a successful college career like I had, that wasn’t something I wanted to do. I wasn’t interested in it. And then a couple games in, I just got tired of not being able to help the team win. I dressed every game, but things weren’t going too well as far as the running back rotation.

“Toub came to me and asked me to play ‘punt protector’ and I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been playing special teams ever since and I love it.”

In 2008, Wolfe led the Bears with 21 special-teams tackles despite missing the final three games with an injury. Last season he recorded nine special-teams stops in eight contests before being placed on injured reserve with a lacerated kidney he sustained in a loss to the Cardinals.

“Special teams is all attitude,” Wolfe said. “It’s like being a pass blocker as a running back. You’ve got to want to do it. If you don’t want to do it, you’re not going to get it done.

“I remember one time in the preseason my rookie year when a guy was running right at me one-on-one. Those are situations that I dream of now on kickoffs. But then I was backing up, trying to create some space to get somebody else to come over because tackling wasn’t something I was very familiar with.

“Like I said, you’ve got to want to do it. You’ve got to have an attitude, a chip on your shoulder, and just want to go in there and make something happen. That’s why I love it. You get pretty much free reign to do whatever you want as long as you make the tackle.”

There’s a stigma with some players, who believe that special teams is “below them” and not as important as contributing on offense or defense. But that’s not the case with the Bears, who have been ranked near the top of the league in special teams since Toub arrived as part of coach Lovie Smith’s original staff in 2004.

“They might have had that attitude in college, but once they get here we try to stamp that out,” Toub said. “During rookie camp we have a nice speech for them about how important special teams are for us.

“And then once they get around our veteran players, they see that there’s a pride about special teams here and it kind of carries over. It infiltrates those guys and they know how important it is.”
